Watch an Entire of Montreal Show

I've seen of Montreal play live 5 times now and it is always an awesome show and a great time. They have a crazy live show with strange props and crazy projections. They are definitely one of my favorite bands to see live. If you've never seen them or have and want to watch them again, NPR posted a video of their entire show from Washington, D.C. Check it out below.

The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends

The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends is a special album of collaborations the Flaming Lips made for Record Store Day 2012. It includes appearances by Bon Iver, Tame Impala, Kesha, Erykah Badu, Yoko Ono, Chris Martin, NIck Cave, and more. I was lucky enough to pick up one of the 10,000 copies available on record store day and have been pretty impressed with my $40 purchase. I was a little concerned that most of the songs would be throwaways, but all of the tracks are pretty solid. Pitchfork gave it an 8.2 in their review. It's a great listen and I expect it will get a wider release in the future. Fortunately you don't have to wait for that. The Future Heart posted and pinpointed videos for all of the songs on YouTube and I've compiled them into a playlist for your listening pleasure. Please note that at least the second to last video is NSFW.

You've Got a Friend: Tapestry

The Soft Bulletin album art

If you love great deals on music, you should check out Amazon’s MP3 store. It is difficult to resist their monthly “100 albums for $5 each” promotion. While browsing through this extensive selection, an old favorite caught my eye: Carole King’s Tapestry. Originally recorded in 1971, praise of this album may seem out of place among this website’s posts dedicated to indie and alternative rock. I hope, however, that this site will serve as a common space for people to share their passion for music. We have all been touched by music that resonates within us long after the final note has ended. Tapestry has been one of those albums for me.

Tapestry is a truly heartfelt album with wonderful lyrics, melodies and rhythms. It is a four time Grammy winner, with over 20 million copies sold worldwide. King wrote or co-wrote all of the songs on the album, several of which went on to be recorded by other artists such as James Taylor and Aretha Franklin. If you are familiar with (and enjoy!) these famous covers, it is worth your time to listen to King’s original recordings. Only here will you find the unparalleled sincerity and vulnerability that distinguish her work.

It is undeniable that Tapestry is a classic. In my opinion, King’s raw emotion and beautiful lyricism is as moving now as it was thirty years ago. It is for this reason that I hold Tapestry so near to my heart. We all have albums that have become old friends over the years. Whether or not you agree with my praise of Tapestry, I hope you take the time to listen to one of your own old friends and thank the artist that created it. Click here to view the deal on Amazon
